Dupuytren’s contracture

Dupuytren’s contracture is a disease of the palmar aponeurosis. It is due to the progressive conversion of the palmar fascia into fibrous tissue. The condition starts out as a firm nodule and progresses slowly to involve the overlying skin. The fingers can undergo contracture with the joints ultimately becoming rigid with disuse. Massage and passive stretching may permit elderly patients to maintain reasonable function without operation. Excision of the dupuytren’s contracture provides the only definitive treatment.
