Facts About Mammograms And Breast Implants

Learn more about Breast ImplantsIf you have breast implants but have not scheduled your first mammogram since surgery, you may be wondering if your implants will interfere with your mammogram screening. Yes, saline and silicone implants can affect a mammogram screening. However, radiology technicians are trained to make adjustments and use special techniques to ensure they get the best views of your breast tissues. For the radiology technician, your safety, comfort and health are very important considerations.

Whether you have existing implants or are considering getting them, here are a few things to keep in mind when scheduling your first post-surgery mammogram:

•Research your mammography facility to ensure that it is experienced imaging women with implants.
•Tell the facility that you have implants when you schedule your appointment, and remind your technician that you have them. Bring detailed information about the type, placement, size, and shape of your implants to your appointment.
•Breast self-exams are important and can be life-saving, especially if you have implants. If you notice any changes to your breasts, contact your doctor immediately. Deciding on breast implant surgery means committing to being especially proactive about your breast health.
•Where your implants are placed is an important factor when it comes to mammography. This is additional information to share with the technician. Implants that were placed below the pectoral muscle are less likely to interfere with a clear view of breast tissue than implants that were placed above the muscle. If you are considering implants, discuss with your surgeon the possibility of getting a base-line mammogram prior to the procedure.

Although these are important considerations to keep in mind, don’t let concerns about future mammography screenings deter you from pursuing implant surgery.
