The Dreaded Signs of Aging: What Are They and What Can You Do about Them?
- Posted on: Jun 30 2019
There are several telltale signs of aging that most men and women expect. We tend to have very little problem dealing with a few wrinkles around the eyes and forehead or the growing number of grey hairs we see in the mirror. However, there are a few lesser-known changes that may inadvertently add years to our appearance. Here, we point out what those are and what you can do about them.
Lower Eyelid Bags
Changes in the superficial tissue under the eyes can lead to one of two problems. The depletion of fat pads under the eyes can create hollows that make dark circles appear. When fat degrades along the upper cheek, the loose tissue just beneath the eye looks pronounced and puffy. Sometimes, under eye bags and hollows occur simultaneously. Each makes the face appear tired and aged.
Treatment for under eye problems can vary based on severity and personal preference. Many of our patients can achieve satisfactory correction using dermal fillers. When we introduce a hyaluronic acid filler like Juvéderm along the tear trough, or fold where the upper cheek meets the lower eyelid, tissue is plumped to create a smooth transition. As a result, shadowing and puffiness are immediately disguised.
For results that last years or for more severe bags, we may suggest lower blepharoplasty. This quick surgical procedure trims excess tissue through discreet incisions that heal to imperceptible scars.
Volume loss doesn’t just occur in the midface. The upper face also changes as a result of collagen depletion. Coinciding with laxity is a downward pull on the brow line. As the brows droop, the face may take on a sad or angry appearance. In either situation, it also looks older. Naturally, most people who begin to experience drooping brows use their upper forehead muscles to raise the brow line. This leads to the development of horizontal lines on the forehead.
There are two ways in which a drooping brow may be treated. Nonsurgically, we may utilize Botox to soften the muscle contractions that are pulling on the brow. Ultherapy is another nonsurgical treatment option for tightening loose skin. When a more significant lift is needed, a brow lift may be recommended.
Changes in lip shape can come as an unwelcome surprise to many people. This loss of volume relates to the degradation of fat pads in various areas of the face. The good news about thinning lips, as well as tiny lines around the lips, is that a quick filler treatment can correct the problem.
