What Is A Breast Lift?
For those seeking to combat the sagging effect caused by nursing, age, and gravity, breast lift surgery is an effective solution. The loss of elasticity in the skin can create a looser appearance that causes the breasts to “hang”. When this occurs, it can be uncomfortable for a woman to wear swimsuits and other similar attire. Breast lift surgery can eliminate the need for specialized bras and is a great way to have a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
Who Is The Candidate For A Breast Lift?
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Himansu Shah M.D., F.A.C.S.
In Dr. Shah’s capable hands, the options are almost endless. From surgical and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, Brazilian butt lift and Breast Augmentation, Dr. Shah can deliver the results you’ve always desired with a simple trip to the office.
How Can I Prepare For My Breast Lift?
You’ll prepare for surgery as you would with any surgery. You’ll need to stop taking blood thinning medication, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and most herbal supplements. That’s because these can cause increased bleeding. If you smoke, you’ll need to stop for at least two weeks prior to your surgery and two weeks after, as smoking constricts the blood vessels, and this impedes healing.
Much of your preparation should focus on your recovery. You’ll want to lay low for the first week after your procedure with Dr. Shah. You want to create a recovery nest filled with comfort. Lots of pillows and blankets. You’ll have to sleep mainly on your back for a good amount of time, so you’ll want pillows positioned to keep you from rolling onto your chest. Get all the entertainment you want right there so you can simply take it easy.
You’ll also be limited in reaching upward and lifting any weight, so if there are items in your cupboards that you use regularly, you’ll want to bring them down onto the counter. You’ll want help around the house, as well. This isn’t a time to go it alone.
How Is A Breast Lift Performed?
As with all of his surgery patients, Dr. Shah views every breast lift procedure as completely individual. There are no standard incisions or methods. Every woman has different patterns of sagging in her breasts. This may be the result of pregnancy or simply the gain and loss of a large amount of weight. The larger the degree of sagging, the wider the base of the breasts becomes, and the more flattened the upper breasts appear. Dr. Shah uses any of three incision placements for these procedures.
During your consultation the two of you will discuss your situation, and Dr. Shah will detail the approach he feels best suits your needs. These are the incision descriptions:
Also called a small-incision mastopexy, a donut-shaped incision is made around the areola. This method creates minimal visible scarring but is only appropriate for women with minimal sagging who don’t need much excess skin removed.
This incision circles the areola and then drops straight down, ending at the breast crease. This method allows moderate removal of excess skin and fat.
This method circles the areola, drops down to the breast crease, and then extends outward in both directions, like the shape of an anchor. The anchor incision allows for the most skin removal and tissue adjustment, but it also creates the largest scar.
For each incision, Dr Shah lifts and reshapes the breast tissue to compensate for sagging and stretching. The nipples and areolae are moved to a higher position to match the new profile of the breasts (not with the areola incision); extra skin can be removed around the areolae to make them smaller. The final step is to trim away excess sagging skin.
If you’ve opted to augment your breasts, at this point breast pockets are created, and the implants are placed using the incisions made for the lift. This makes implant placement quite simple, as Dr. Shah already has access through the existing incisions.
What Kind Of Results Can I Expect From My Breast Lift?
This surgery brings your breasts back up to a higher position on the chest. This reverses the sagging that has brought more and more of the breast volume to the bottom of the breast. Lifts are very satisfying procedures for women whose breasts have become pendulous. They can downsize enlarged areolae. They can take nipples that may be pointing downward and bring them back to their natural higher position. And if you’ve opted to have Dr. Shah add implants, you’ll gain a curvier figure at the same time.

What Are The Risks Involved With A Breast Lift?
Breast lifts are major surgeries, so they include the risks involved with surgery: bleeding or the formation of a hematoma, reaction to anesthesia, infection, and slow incision healing.
Risks related to breast lifts include:
Will I Have Noticeable Scarring After The Procedure?
Scarring will be a part of these procedures, as the incisions are somewhat lengthy. But you’ll be surprised at how they fade with time. As you would assume, the anchor incision will create the most scarring.
The best advice for managing or attempting to minimize the appearance of your scars is to leave the silicone wound dressings in place until Dr. Shah removes them at your follow-up. Also, always wearing your surgical bra and then your support bra during the first 4-6 weeks is critical. This eliminates any pressure on the incisions, which keeps the scars as narrow as possible. It also helps eliminate some of the redness.
Topical scar-minimizing treatments keep the area moisturized and help to minimize the appearance of the scars. SkinMedica makes one such product called Scar Recovery Gel with Centelline.
Lightly massaging your scars can help them heal more smoothly. But you cannot do this too early and put stress on your incisions. Ask Dr. Shah when massage could be appropriate, along with the proper technique.
