We may not be surprised when we start to see lines and wrinkles around our nose, mouth, and eyes. What can feel like an unpleasant development in facial aging is the way the skin on the eyelids themselves changes. Many people at some point realize that they no longer have an upper eyelid crease. The tissue on the upper eyelids has become loose and saggy. Sometimes, skin droops into the field of vision. Heavy upper eyelids can make us appear tired or angry. Wanting to look more like themselves again, many people ask if injectables can help rejuvenate their sagging eyelids.

What causes droopy eyelids in the first place?

When we are young, we can count on our body to produce enough collagen and elastin to keep the skin smooth and firm. By age thirty, this all changes. We typically don’t realize this, though, until we have begun to see the effects of declining vital chemicals. Without sufficient collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, the skin loses volume, resiliency, and elasticity to keep it from sagging. Eyelid tissue is particularly thin and therefore more susceptible to degradation without enough collagen and elastin. Without these chemicals, we may develop:

  • Wrinkles and creases on the eyelids due to volume loss in tissue
  • Puffiness caused by protruding fat pads on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Hollowing or dark circles under the eyes caused by volume loss

Can Injectables Help?

Many people wish to manage the signs of aging without surgery. Because injectables like Botox and dermal fillers are so well-known, the hope is often that one of these products will do the trick at correcting sagging eyelids. In some cases, this may be possible.

  • Botox may be injected into the muscles that control the elevation of the eyebrows. By lifting the brow line, treatment may alleviate some degree of eyelid heaviness. This product works by easing muscle contractions so that skin can lie more naturally.
  • Dermal fillers are typically only used under the eyes to correct puffiness or a sunken appearance. These products work by increasing the volume of tissue using hyaluronic acid, which binds to water molecules in the skin.

Your Face, Your Treatment

Injectables can correct several different concerns but may not be right for everyone. Drooping eyelids may improve somewhat with injectables or with laser skin resurfacing or Ultherapy. In more severe cases, blepharoplasty is the best approach to achieve noticeable, natural-looking improvements.
