Kybella

KybellaThe double chin is a telltale sign of aging. The pull of gravity, coupled with the accumulation of fat, makes for a profile that sags under the jawline, lacking the definition of our younger days. Dr. Shah offers Kybella® to address double chins. Kybella® is a prescription brand name for an injectable product that dissolves fat under the chin and dramatically tightens and improves patients’ profiles.

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is basically deoxycholic acid. Kybella® was approved by the FDA and came on the market in April 2015 specifically to break down fat under the chin and slim the profile. This is the only approved use of Kybella® at this point.

How does Kybella® work?

Submental fullness. That’s the clinical term for a double chin. The cause of most double chins is fat that has accumulated under the jawline. The key to Kybella® success is simple — deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body whose job is to aid in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. It helps break down fat in the foods you eat. But scientists discovered that deoxycholic acid doesn’t differentiate between ingested fat or fat that has decided to accumulate under your chin.
When Kybella® is injected under your chin, the deoxycholic acid breaks down the fat cells and your body flushes them from your system. These fat cells are gone for good, and your body now has less ability to store fat now that they are gone. This tightens your profile dramatically.

Kybella for Double Chin Treatment

Because it attacks fat, Kybella® works on double chins that are the result of accumulated fat. As you would assume, it doesn’t work on double chins that are simply the result of sagging skin. So, if your double chin is more a fact of gravity rather than fat a neck lift or midface lift would be a better option than Kybella®.

Kybella® Procedure

Getting Kybella® to combat your double chin is easy. Dr. Shah simply injects Kybella® with a very fine needle in various spots under your chin. You can opt to have a topical anesthetic prior to the injections, but most people don’t feel the need, saying the injections feel like a slight pinprick. A Kybella® session takes just a few minutes.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The FDA has set the maximum number of Kybella® treatments you can have at six. There isn’t a set number; it is really based on your expectations and how much fat exists in your double chin. Many of Dr. Shah’s patients feel they have achieved their goals with just two to four treatments.

How long do Kybella results last?

Kybella® attacks and gets rid of the fat in your double chin permanently. Plus, when it is gone your body has decreased capacity to store fat there in the future. Should you put on a bunch of weight down the road, you could rebuild a double chin, but if you don’t do that your results will last forever. Your skin will slacken somewhat with age, but the fat is gone for good.

Kybella® Side Effects

If you’re familiar with dermal fillers such as Juvederm, the side effects of Kybella® are basically the same: numbness, swelling, redness, bruising, residual pain, and areas of hardness at the injection sites. Beyond that, there have been very rare instances of nerve injury in the jaw that can create an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, and some weakness in surrounding facial muscles. In tests, these reactions didn’t resolve immediately, but they were not long-term either.
