Common Dermatological Conditions

Acne is a condition that causes blocked pores, pimples, cysts, and other lesions on the skin. While it most commonly affects teenagers, acne can affect adults of any age. Acne can appear anywhere on the skin including the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. At Signature Plastic Surgery, we offer several acne treatment methods including topical and oral medications to treat and prevent future acne breakouts.

Due to aging, sun exposure, and a host of internal and external factors our skin can develop different types of growths. These growths can range in color, size, and texture and all require their own type of treatment. Common skin growths include adnexal lesions, angioma, cysts, dermatofibroma, digital mucous cysts, keratoacanthoma, lipoma, milia, moles, neurofibroma, prurigo nodularis, pyogenic granuloma, sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrheic keratoses, verrucous acanthomas, and xanthelasma.

Dandruff is a skin condition that affects the scalp. Symptoms typically include flaking and itching of the skin. Mild dandruff can be treated with over-the-counter dandruff shampoo while severe cases may require a prescription-strength shampoo. Changes in stress levels, shampoo habits, and changes in styling products can also decrease the symptoms of dandruff.

Eczema is a very common skin condition that appears as a red rash and itchy skin. It is most common in infants and young children and typically develops from an allergic reaction or malfunction of the immune system. Eczema can appear anywhere on the body including on the face, inside the arms, behind the knees, and the scalp. The chronic form of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis and the condition is not contagious even when making skin-to-skin contact

Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that causes excessive sweating of the hands, feet, armpits, face, genital area, or the entire body. While the cause of excessive sweating is unknown it does often run in families. While living with hyperhidrosis patients can experience white and wrinkled or red and irritated skin as a result of the moisture. Additionally, patients can experience an odor.

Patients can experience a wide range of hair problems including scalp psoriasis, dandruff, hair loss, and alopecia. While they all relate to the hair and scalp, each condition comes with its own set of symptoms and treatment methods. During a consultation dermatology providers at Signature Plastic Surgery and Dermatology will work with you to provide an appropriate course of treatment for your condition.

Hives, also known as urticaria, is a skin condition that presents as swollen, pale red bumps on the skin. Symptoms of hives including itching, stinging, or burning. Hives are commonly caused by an allergic reaction so they are not a contagious condition. Usually, hives last for a few hours, however, severe cases can continue for months. Hives can vary in size from a single small dot to large patches called plaques.

In rare cases, patients can experience hives on the tongue or in the throat. This can interfere with breathing and cause life-threatening complications. Patients who experience hives in these areas should seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Itchy skin, also known as pruritus, is a tingling or irritating sensation that provokes a patient to scratch their skin. While scratching typically provides temporary relief, persistent itching often makes the problem worse. Itching that is experienced throughout the entire body is likely a result of a systemic disorder and localized itching is commonly due to contact with an irritant. Blood tests or a skin biopsy can help determine the exact cause.

Moles are a type of skin growth that appears throughout the body. They are typically brown or black in color and can appear alone or in groups. Most moles are benign and do not pose a health risk, however, patients can choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. After an examination and testing the mole for cancer, patients can discuss removal options with the dermatologist provider. At Signature Plastic Surgery we offer treatment and removal options for all patients.

Pediatric dermatology is a subspecialty that allows dermatologists to care for skin conditions of children. Many skin conditions appear more frequently in toddlers or adolescents than adults. In addition, children often require a different treatment method than adults. Whether for cosmetic or medical reasons, dermatology providers at Signature Plastic Surgery and Dermatology can help treat your child’s skin conditions.

Psoriasis is the rapid buildup of skin cells causing red, raised, dry, and cracked scaly patches or blisters on the skin. This condition is a result of an autoimmune disorder that causes skin cells to replace themselves every 3 to 4 days instead of the usual 30. Psoriasis can appear on the scalp, elbows, hands, feet, and genitals. In some cases it can affect the fingernails, causing yellowing and small depressions in the nail.

Patients with psoriasis can also develop psoriatic arthritis. This is a form of arthritis that specifically affects people with psoriasis. Symptoms are similar to psoriasis but include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. There is no cure for either form of psoriasis, however, we offer treatment options to relieve symptoms.

Affecting up to 10% fo the populate, rosacea is a common condition of the face. Rosacea appears as small, pus-filled red bumps similar to acne. The appearance of rosacea is more common in women with fair skin between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. There is no cure for rosacea, however, we offer several treatment options in order to relieve symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

While your body naturally heals itself, not everyone’s body does so in the same way. By visiting Signature Plastic Surgery, we can help treat an existing scar or manage the healing of a fresh injury. After an examination, our dermatologist provider can come up with a treatment plan to improve or remove your scar.

Skin cancer screenings are important to a patient so they can be evaluated for pre-cancers and skin cancers. Screenings include regular head-to-toe skin exams and allow patients to find and receive treatment for skin cancer as early as possible. Screenings are especially important if you have had a lot of sun exposure at any point in your life, have had skin cancer or have a family member with a history of melanoma.

This exam is different than a regular new problem exam. You will be requested to change into a gown and not wear makeup or nail polish.  Dermatology providers at Signature Plastic Surgery and Dermatology will spend this time performing a thorough exam of the body using a special tool called a dermatoscope to better visualize any lesions of concern. You will be notified if any of your lesions require testing or treatment.

Your skin is typically the barrier against infections, however, it is sometimes susceptible to them. Common types of skin infections include bacterial, such as cellulitis or impetigo, viral, such as shingles or warts, fungal, such as athlete’s foot or yeast infections, or parasitic, such as lice and scabies. Each infection is different so an examination is required before treatment begins.

Rashes can appear on a patient’s skin as a result of many different medical problems. Rashes occur when the skin is inflamed or swollen and change the color or texture of the skin. We treat a variety of rashes or conditions that cause rashes including contact dermatitis, allergic rashes, seborrheic dermatitis, viral or bacterial skin conditions, systemic diseases, sun or heat rashes, and stress rashes.

Warts are a skin condition that appears as small skin growths on the surface of the skin. These growths can vary in color, size, and be flat or raised. Warts are a result of an infection from a strain of HPV, human papillomavirus. Patients can be spread warts through direct skin contact and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to them. A majority of wart types disappear on their own but those that do not can be treated with medication or removed.
