If a woman is self-conscious about the appearance of her vaginal lips, it can make her uneasy when in intimate situations. In other cases, the labia can interfere with activities such as cycling or can be painful during intercourse.
Dr. Shah can perform labiaplasty to reduce and shape a woman’s labia minora and labia majora.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a woman’s external genitalia. This procedure is most commonly used to reduce the inner genital lips, known as the labia minora. These can overhang the outer lips (labia majora), or appear uneven or overly thick. Beyond appearance, overhanging labia minora can create rubbing and chafing during activities such as cycling and running, or they can appear bulky whilst wearing tight clothing.
Would I be a good candidate for Labiaplasty?
Opting for labiaplasty with Dr. Shah is a completely personal decision. Whether your reasons are aesthetic, such as to decrease overly thick labia, or for comfort during sex, riding a bike, or even wearing yoga pants. There is no need to live with discomfort in these situations. Plus, if you feel self-conscious during intimacy, no one deserves to have those feelings. Labiaplasty does not involve a difficult recovery.
The methods used by Dr. Shah are tailored specifically to the individual patient and her goals for the procedure. The most common goal is to reduce the labia minor. To do so, Dr. Shah employs two methods: the “wedge” incision and the “edge” excision.
In a “wedge” incision, a vertical wedge of labia minora tissue is removed. With an “edge” excision, tissue along the edge of the lips is removed. In many cases, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced.
In cases where the labia majora are too large and uncomfortable, Dr. Shah will remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.
The Recovery Process of Labiaplasty
After your surgery, there will be some swelling and pain. icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first day or two can reduce some of the swelling. You’ll need to restrict your activity to low-key options for the first five days after surgery. In most cases, exercise will have to wait for two to three weeks. It is important to wait at least 4-6 weeks to engage in sexual intercourse, as engaging in sex too soon risks tearing the incisions. For similar reasons, it is important to avoid using tampons for up to six weeks.
Risks Involved with Labiaplasty
Risks are relatively low due to the highly vascular nature of this area. However, risks do include potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is rare, but is a higher risk with extensive tissue removal.
What results should I expect?
Your results are immediate, but you should expect some swelling. Results are usually fully realized after a week or two. After this surgery, most patients report reduced chafing and physical discomfort, an improved sex life, and a boost in confidence.
